Brain/Nerve System controls body function... On your way to second base, you need to know how your body works. How does every cell know just exactly what to do and just exactly when to do it? What controls function? What controls health? Your body has a central computer which keeps track of everything that needs to be done, when and in the right order: the brain. It controls and coordinates each and every cell so that the millions of things which need to be done every second get done. The brain gets its information and sends its messages over a wiring system known as the nerve system. |

Extending down from the brain is your spinal cord and off to the sides are large nerve cells. (One cell can have as many as 12 nerves serving it!) Messages travel along these nerve pathways to every cell in the body. As long as these nerve pathways are clear from interference, your brain is kept informed and can tell cells how to function. You are healthy. |
| The spinal
cord and nerve trunks are very important to the survival of your body and are
therefore very well protected. Hard individual bones known as vertebrae surround
the cord and are separated by a soft disc. This allows your body to flex and bend. |
